Updated February 23, 2019 08:04:51 An 18-year-old Afrikaannan man who spent a year in prison for exploiting an internet video of a 16-year old girl has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
The man pleaded guilty last year to aggravated sexual assault, kidnapping and voyeurism after he filmed a video of an unnamed girl.
The 16-month-old victim in the video had been kidnapped and forced to perform sexual acts on a webcam, police said.
The video was viewed nearly 1.7 million times.
The victim’s family released a statement after the sentencing, saying the man had been trying to make a quick buck on the internet.
“He has been abusing the video with his family and friends for a long time,” the statement read.
“We cannot let this happen to another family.”
The victim has been living with the family of the alleged abuser since she was a toddler.
Her mother is still alive, the statement said.
A victim’s father and brother have also been charged with aggravated sexual abuse and are due to appear in court next week.
Prosecutors say the alleged abuse took place between June and August last year, when the victim was 16.
They said they had recorded the video to show the alleged victim how she was used and abused.
In August, police arrested the man.
Prosecutors have said the man was trying to sell it for $100,000 to a young woman in Australia, who was not a victim in this case.
The woman, who police say was underage, is also charged with kidnapping and forced prostitution.
Her lawyer did not immediately return a call for comment.
