A car thief has been spotted breaking into cars in the US for the past two weeks, stealing the keys and stealing valuables in at least two separate incidents, police in Florida say.
The latest incident was reported to police in a suburb of Orlando.
“In both instances, the thieves entered the vehicle without a key, which is why it is important to take your vehicle to a mechanic or mechanic’s office immediately if you have any keys in your car,” the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
On Friday, the department said a man in the area was able to break into a Toyota Tacoma and steal the keys.
However, the car owner had a key in his car, and was able put the car in reverse and take it back to his home.
As a result, the thief took the car to a local mechanic for a mechanic’s report, the sheriff’s office said.
“After the mechanic examined the vehicle, the driver realized the keys were gone and called 911,” the statement said.
“After an investigation, the keys have been recovered and are currently being sought by police for further investigation,” the sheriff said.
The Florida Keys Police Department said the burglary took place on Thursday and was not related to the stolen key, but the agency would “actively investigate any possible involvement” of stolen vehicles.
“It is imperative that our residents take precautions in their everyday lives, and it is our job to protect them,” the department added.
